3rd Grade
In 3rd grade, students will put all they have learned about music literacy so far in their study of the recorder. Recorder is a major focus of the 3rd grade music class. The first few months of school are spent reviewing our knowledge of music literacy including note values (quarter notes and rests, half notes, eighth notes), rhythm reading (ta, ta di, ta-ah, sh), pitch reading (mi, so, la), and other music basics (the staff and meter). Once these concepts are reviewed, we will push forward to new music literacy concepts including whole notes, solfege pitches do and re, and reading pitch letter names on the staff (ABCDEFG). Once these concepts are prepared and presented, we will practice them without and then with the recorder.
ACTIVE music making remains an integral part of the music room in 3rd grade. Because students are expected to have an expanding knowledge of music, it is important that they are constantly exercising that knowledge by actively practicing and making music. Active music making provides opportunity for creativity and allows children to perform at their individual ability levels. The recorder unit provides students an opportunity to progress and improve at individual rates and gives them their first experience of individual music practice at home.
