Happy New Year!!
As part of the Gateway School District Music Curriculum, all 3rd Grade students learn to play the recorder. The recorder is a historical instrument that was played throughout the Renaissance and Baroque eras. Our students are very fortunate to be provided with a recorder by the school district. We have already begun learning the basics in music class, and next week your child may bring his/her recorder home. However, before the recorders leave the music room, I will discuss with the 3rd Graders the following rules: I AM RESPECTFUL. Recorders should only be played at appropriate times. At school, recorders only come out during music class. At home, be sensitive to your family and only practice at a time that is good for everyone. I AM RESPONSIBLE. Practice is necessary to get better at any instrument. Practice at home is necessary! Mr. Verno assigns recorder homework each week. Setting up a time to practice everyday will help to build a routine. An excellent time to practice is right before or after doing other homework. Just 5 minutes each day can make a huge difference. Recorders must be returned to school each week for music class. Mr. Verno suggests putting your recorder back into your backpack after practicing. This way, it will always be ready on the day you have music. Forgetting to bring your recorder and book to music class will affect your progress and your grade for music class. I AM SAFE. Recorders should only played during music class and at home. They should never come out in the hallway, on the bus, or outside. Any students breaking this rule will lose their recorder privileges for 2 rotations and will leave their materials in the music room. Although we will continue to study the recorder throughout 3rd Grade and into 4th Grade, the highlight of the recorder unit is the annual spring performance. This year’s 3rd Grade Spring Concert at Evergreen will be on Monday, May 6, 2019 at 7:00pm and at CSE on Thursday, May 9, 2019 at 7:00pm. All 3rd Grade students are expected to attend, so be sure to mark your calendars! Thank you in advance for your support and encouragement during our study of the recorder. I’m sure with your help our performance this spring will be spectacular. Please be sure to sign and return the attached permission slip so that your child may bring home his/her recorder, and do no hesitate to contact me with any questions you might have.
