I am excited to announce a new DonorsChoose project! I am still trying to build up the Orff instrument inventory at CSE and Evergreen to give us time for more musical experiences rather than waiting and taking turns. Ideally, we should have enough instruments for each child in each class. This year, my largest class is 29 students! That would mean that I should have 29 instruments! At Evergreen, we currently have 6 and only 5 at CSE. This new instrument will help to balance the amount of instruments at the 2 schools and will allow 12 students to play at once. (2 share each instrument) That is usually about half of a class, then we take turns. My goal over the next few years is to grow each school's Orff instrument collection to about 12 instruments so that classes of 24 students could all play at once if 2 students play each instrument. This project will help us get closer to that goal! Please consider donating to the project "No One Left Out: Instruments Needed!" The amount needed is $344.54, and all donations are DOUBLED in the first week if you use the code SPARK at checkout. Click the image below to see the whole project. Thank you for your consideration! Even if you aren't able to donate, please share, share, share! You never know who might be willing to help out our music rooms!

This school year (2014-2015), I created a project on DonorsChoose.org to begin getting more new Orff instruments for the music classrooms at CSE and Evergreen. This project was funded very quickly by generous donors through this amazing website. My current project, "No One Left Out," has received an amazing $176.81 already from 5 fantastic donors, but it still has a way to go. $523.61 to be exact. My project has just a little over a month to be funded. It expires on June 9, 2015. Please SHARE, SHARE, SHARE, and SHARE! Share it on Twitter. Share it on Facebook. Share it by email. Share it on any other social media outlet that you use! You never know who might want to donate even just a few dollars to our schools' music rooms. Here's a picture of what the project's site looks like. Having Orff instruments in a music room can be an amazing resource. Many elementary music rooms around the world have unpitched instruments like drums, triangles, tambourines, maracas, woodblocks, and other similar instruments. These "rhythm" instruments are extremely valuable in performing and creating music. The sounds that they make can accompany songs or create a soundscape for a story. They cannot, however, provide any melody or harmony. Melody and harmony are gigantic parts of the musical world! How can music teachers provide a holistic music education without melody or harmony? They can't! Orff instruments like xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels are the perfect tools for elementary music teachers to get their students to accompany songs with harmony or to get their students to begin playing, improvising, or composing melodies.
At CSE and Evergreen, we are fortunate to have a few of these instruments, but often they go unused because there are not enough for the whole class to use. Students sit and wait their turn for sometimes long portions of class. At each school, there are 5 Orff instruments, which allows at most 10 students to play them at one time while the other 10-15 students in the class wait their turn. Although students at CSE and Evergreen are learning many, many things about the world of music, I believe that their music education will be enhanced by the addition of several more of these Orff instruments. I'm committed to providing the best musical education that I can for the kiddos at our schools with what I have. In the meantime, I am also trying my best to get us more instruments! Check the out the full write up for the project on the DonorsChoose website by clicking on the picture above. For now, please considering giving or sharing this website with as many people as possible. Thank you in advance for your support. Musically yours, Mr. Verno Happy Snow Day Everyone! I hope everyone stayed safe and warm today during our second snow day this year. I wanted to post about my current DonorsChoose.org project.
I am currently asking for donations to fund a new alto xylophone Orff instrument with an extra set of mallets. This time, I'm going with an instrument that is a little higher quality than the previous instrument. I'm confident we'll see a lot of generosity poured out over the next few months.
