Over the first few months of school, I've taken many pictures of different music room activities, but I haven't had much time to post to the blog! Here's a quick recap of the first quarter of music and a little of the second quarter. KINDERGARTEN
2ND GRADE
3RD GRADE4TH GRADEIt's Not Long As a review of known rhythms, 4th Grade learned this fun rondo and added in their own creativity along the way. After breaking up into small groups, we read the rhythms from the board and played them on different unpitched percussion instruments. Then, as each group practiced their rhythm, they add their own movement and voice sounds. Here's what Mr. Catone's class came up with. Concert Preparation - Winter Fantasy As we learn our repertoire for the annual Winter Concert, sometimes we listen to ourselves to help improve our singing. He is a short preview of what you will hear in next month's Winter Concert at Evergreen and CSE! That's all I have for now! Check back soon for more tidbits from the music room! For the first several weeks of school, 3rd Grade has been working on the folk song and play party "Great Big House." Play parties are a fun way of connecting music to our American history. Smithsonian Folkways explains play parties below: "To evade the religious prohibition against dancing in certain American communities, young people in the 19th century devised an ingenious solution—they adapted children’s games, which were permitted. The result was so-called play parties. Participants sang creative songs to cue movements, and the events were great “mixers.” The only element lacking was instrumental music." While learning this song, we reviewed how to read and notate quarter notes and eighth notes. We also learned a new rhythm, the quarter rest. Here's a shot of the notation from Beth's Music Notes. You can also listen to a sample recording of "Great Big House" and other play parties at the link below: http://www.folkways.si.edu/TrackDetails.aspx?itemid=19300 OR you can listen to Dr. Levine's class form CSE performing the song and dance in this video! This was a very tricky dance to learn, and other classes had some difficulty. Dr. Levine's class did a fantastic job! Congratulations to them! Check back soon for more peeks into the music room!
