I am writing to remind you that all Gateway 4th Grade students will be performing in just under a month in the 4th Grade Chorus Spring Concert on Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at 7:00pm in the Robert A. Read Performing Arts Center (Gateway High School Auditorium). 4th Graders from Evergreen, Ramsey, University Park, and Dr. Cleveland Steward, Jr. Elementary Schools will combine together to perform a variety of music they have been working hard to learn this year. In order for us to prepare and rehearse for the evening of the concert as one large group, we will be traveling to Gateway High School on the morning of Tuesday, May 14th. Your child should have brought home a permission slip to be signed and returned to school so that he/she may participate with us in our rehearsal at the high school. You can find a copy of the permission slip HERE. On the evening of the concert, students should wear something nice white on top and black on the bottom. Boys should wear a white shirt with a collar, black dress pants, and black dress shoes with black socks. Girls should wear a white blouse and black dress pants/skirt or a black and white dress with black dress shoes to be comfortable in for standing for the duration of the evening. If your child does not have this, he/she should wear something as close as possible. We want to look our best, but no one will be told they cannot perform with us on stage! Students should report to the high school band room no later than 6:30pm to get in our concert order and warm-up our voices to perform. We will visit the band room during our rehearsal, but signs will also be posted directing them where to go. I look forward to seeing everyone there! Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions you might have. Here is that information again at-a-glance: 4th Grade Chorus Spring Concert Tuesday, May 14, 2019 Robert A. Dear 2nd Grade Parents and Guardians,
It is hard to believe that the holiday season is already upon us! With it comes lots of celebrating but also lots of practicing – practicing for concerts, that is! This year’s 2nd Grade Winter Concerts will take place on Friday, December 14, 2018. Dr. Cleveland Steward, Jr. Elementary School's performance will take place at 10:00am, and Evergreen Elementary School's performance will take place at 2:15pm. Parents, family, and friends are invited to come and enjoy the talents of our 2nd Grade students. They will perform a musical program based on the book Extra Yarn by Mac Barnett. A portion of our program will be a traditional performance with songs relating to the story; however, other parts will be more of an “inform-ance” to share what we learn and do in music class each week that will also go along with and help to tell the story of Extra Yarn. The concert will take place during the school day, so all students will attend school as usual. On this day, all 2nd Grade students should wear their favorite colorful sweater as part of the story. Students may wear anything solid colored as a bottom to complement their sweater. Jeans, khakis, or a skirt would work well. They are also invited to bring a scarf, gloves, or mittens- anything made of yarn to include in the program! We have been working very hard during music class, but you can also encourage your child to practice at home! A few of our songs have a lot of words to memorize! You can find the lyrics and some music clips of the songs in the "For Students" section of this website! Just CLICK HERE. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions you might have about our upcoming performance. I hope to see you there! Sing-cerely, Mr. Verno The Gateway 4th Grade Chorus has again been invited to perform at the 2nd Annual Monroeville “Light Up the Night” Menorah Lighting and Chanukah Celebration. This event is open to the whole community at the Miracle Mile Shopping Center on Monday, December 3 at 5:30pm. Students will sing a few Chanukah songs and then are free to join in the festivities of the celebration. Last year, all were invited to partake in the latkes, hot chocolate, Chanukah gifts, and more! This event is an optional performance for our 4th graders. I will be in attendance to lead the students in the songs we are working on in chorus, and after singing they will return to you to enjoy the event. If you would like your child to attend, please dress for the weather and plan to arrive around 5:20pm so that we can get organized and ready to sing. We will gather near the menorah, which is placed in the parking lot between Panera Bread and Chick-fil-A. The area is blocked off for the celebration. Look for the tents! Check out the flyer below: If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to the celebration! It was a lot of fun last year!
Sing-cerely, Mr. Verno Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year in the music room! Now that the dust has settled from the first several weeks of school, I'd like to share with you some things going on in the music room. 2018-2019 Concert & Program Schedule This year's schedule is still being put together, but each grade level will have some type of performance! Some performances will be after-school concerts, others will be in-school programs, and even others will be in-class "inform"ances. Check for your child's grade below: Kindergarten & 1st Grade "Inform"ances For these grades, I invite you into the music room to see what we do in a typical music class! Look for more information soon about what day and time you can come see your child's music class. These will take place sometime during March 2019. 2nd Grade The Winter Program featuring 2nd Grade does not have a definite date set YET, but it will most likely take place on Friday, December 14, 2018 during the school day with CSE performing in the morning and Evergreen performing in the afternoon. This program will showcase the various types of activities we do and learn in music class all tied together with a winter theme! Expect to hear some singing, see some games, an instrument piece, and maybe even some dancing! 3rd Grade The highlight of 3rd grade music class is the recorder. This year, we are going to change things up a bit from our tradition of the past few years. 3rd Grade will perform a Spring Program featuring a recorder performance. However, expect to hear some singing, other instruments, and even some dancing! 4th Grade Chorus In 4th Grade, students participate in Chorus as well as a typical music class each week. The 4th Grade Chorus Concert combines all 4 Gateway Elementary schools in one big choir! This has been a fantastic event and experience for our choristers the past few years. This concert will take place on Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at 7:00pm in the Robert A. Read Performing Arts Center (Gateway High School Auditorium). Be sure to look for more information about each grade's performances coming home soon! You can also always check here on Mr. Verno's Music Room Website for more information in the Concert Corner (which is to the right side of the screen) and also in the For Parents section on the Concert Calendar Page. As always, do no hesitate to contact me with any questions you might have! 1st Grade Folk Dance at CSE!We have been practicing what we learned in Kindergarten to get ready for 1st Grade musical concepts. One thing we've done recently is this dance from Kindergarten. We call it our dance from Queen Caroline's ball. Check out Ms. Ackerman's class! 4th Grade Play Party at CSEIn 4th Grade, we recently learned about American play parties. A play party is a social event in which people gather to sing and "dance." Play parties began in the 1830s in the United States as a route around strict social practices banning dancing and the playing of musical instruments. The areas most influenced by the practice were the Southern and Midwestern parts of the United States. Folk songs were used as means to give the attendants choreographed movements for each phrase. No instruments were played at the events, as they were banned by the social movements of the area. Singing and clapping were used to convey each song. Because dancing was banned, the movements took on the quality of children's games. A popular play party from Tennessee is Alabama Gal. Below, you'll see pictures of Mr. O'Reilly's class in 2 longways sets performing the play party! Check back soon for more exciting things happening in the music room!
Sing-cerely, Mr. Verno This letter is to remind you of the upcoming recorder concert for all 3rd Graders. I hope you are as excited as I am to see everyone on the big stage sharing their hard work with you! The concert will take place on Tuesday, May 22, 2018 at 7:00pm in the Robert A. Read Performing Arts Center (Gateway High School Auditorium). Students should arrive at 6:30pm in the GHS Library to warm-up and prepare for the concert. Signs will be posted in the auditorium lobby to guide students to the library.
On the morning of May 21, 2018, ALL third grade students will report to school as usual. At 9:20am, students and their homeroom teachers will be bussed from their elementary school to GHS for a rehearsal in the space. This is critical to the evening running smoothly. The students will be in the space, find their seats, and have an opportunity to play on stage as a district-wide ensemble before the audience arrives. Students will then be bussed back to their respective schools by 12:15 pm for lunch and to finish their school day. There is a permission form attached that should be returned no later than Wednesday, May 16. There will be many families attending this concert, so there are a few things to be mindful of regarding space. Attached, there is a map of the GHS campus showing all of the available parking. The majority of parking is located behind the sports complex or behind the school in the student lot by the stadium. Please RSVP confirming your child’s participation and the approximate number of people in your party at the following link: https://bit.ly/2KCbOF5. If you do not have a Skyward account set up, please make a note on the permission slip whether or not your child will be participating in the evening concert and how many guests you expect to attend. When you arrive inside the Robert A. Read Performing Arts Center, please start filling the rows from the middle, leaving no seats empty. There will be families of every third grade and many fourth grade students in the district in attendance and we hope to seat as many as possible. There is no need to save a seat for your student because they will have an assigned seat to return to after their part of the program to watch the fourth grade students perform! No one will be told they cannot perform with us on stage! If you have any questions concerning the concert or the rehearsal the morning before, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you for supporting your child’s music education, and I look forward to seeing you at the concert! Sing-cerely, Mr. Dave Verno |
